About Our School

Innovations Early College High School is part of the Salt Lake City School District, the oldest public school district in Utah that began in 1890. Boundaries for the district are identical to the city limits for Salt Lake City. Employing about 1,300 teachers who instruct about 25,000 students K-12, the district is the ninth largest in the state. The district serves over 7000 students in grades 9-12 with about 500 teachers delivering rigorous and high quality instruction. Over 20 teachers deliver instruction at the Innovations High campus.

Graduating students from high schools in the Salt Lake City School District score above the national average on the ACT and enroll in all of the state universities such as the University of Utah and Utah State University as well as all major universities in the country such as Harvard, Stanford, Brown, University of Michigan, Yale, BYU, Princeton, UCLA MIT, and NYU. Indeed we are providing highly educated graduates that are very successful.

The district operates five high schools which also includes Innovations Early College High School, a "student centered, personalized education" school that will focus on learning through digital technology, located in the south-central part of the city attached to Salt Lake Community College South City campus.

Students may also attend classes at East High School, Highland High School, and West High School as needed. We offer a wide variety of courses and programs to meet the needs of all students.

As a personalized learning school, we

  • provide students with access to blended learning regardless of time;
  • provide high quality courses for all students through blended learning;
  • utilize the power and scalability of technology to customize education so that students may learn in their own style preference and at their own pace;
  • utilize technology to remove the constraints of a traditional classroom. This allows students to access learning at any time and in any place, facilitating flexibility to take advantage of their peak learning time;
  • provide personalized learning where students can spend as much time as needed to master the material;
  • provide greater access to self-paced programs enabling high-achieving students to accelerate academically, while struggling students have additional time and help to gain competency;
  • allow students to customize their schedule to better meet their academic goals; and
  • provide quality-learning options to better prepare students for post-secondary education and career opportunities.

A day at Innovations Early College High School

A student attends school each day between 7 am - 5 pm.  When on campus they will be involved in teacher led student skill groups, study groups, a group project session, and working alone on the determined courses. Student assemblies are held every two weeks where we nourish our culture of success, and we also recognize individual student achievement with immediate feedback.

A personalized learning environment for every student

A student has the opportunity to dynamically customize their schedule. In addition to taking courses at Innovations, students may also take courses at East, Highland, West, the Career and Technical Center, or at the college. Through the personalized education plan, a student may take anywhere from one to eight courses at a time.  We believe that managing four to five courses at a time creates opportunities for students to find immediate success in their courses.  A student may complete a course as quickly as they demonstrate competency, with the capacity to begin taking a new course immediately thereafter.

This approach allows students the capacity to focus more deeply on fewer subjects at a time if they choose, thus increasing their motivation, sense of accomplishment, and empowered self-paced learning.

Advanced educational opportunities

Partnered with the Salt Lake Community College and the Salt Lake District's Career and Technical Education Center shared campus, a seamless and visible transition between K-12 and higher education becomes a viable option for every student. The facility, completed April 2012, is open year round with extended daily hours. It is equipped with labs, technology, and classrooms designed for collaboration and individualized learning. It is a place where the best of both worlds is intertwined into a full-service learning experience; a place where college and careers becomes an absolute partnership with high school. A place where students are empowered and parents and teachers are liberated with real-time data about performance and progress. A place where every student has control over time, place, path, and pace.
